Late Night, Maudlin Street

What do you do when you get to the middle of your story and realize it’s already done?

There will be no side two. No intermission. No sequel.

What do you do when the story you still expected to take off is only headed toward a short epilogue?

I turn up the music, and I’d like to say that it helps, but it doesn’t.

I’m driving toward something that I’d like to say I hope will take my mind off this, but it won’t.

God doesn’t listen and hasn’t for a long time.

So I say.

So I excuse myself.

Why is it that so many people live their entire lives without thinking what Jesus would do except when they see it on a bumper sticker?

Every day, I’ve thought one day. Every day I’ve secretly planned one day.

For almost forty years, I’ve been one daying every single day and night.

But that one day is never going to come, is it?

Is it, Tyler?

“Get busy living or get busy dying,” my favorite movie quote goes.

Yeah, I’ve been busy dying and haven’t even known it.

The music serves to help enrage.

The music serves to help exorcise.

If I’m dying, and I’m already guilty, and I have nothing left to give, so be it.

Then I’ll turn up the music and tune out the rest of everything else.

Including the one dayitis.
